“Do I make you nervous?”

She withdrew her hand and glanced away.

“Somehow, I doubt you can afford to live on the profits of this bookstore. This place is too small. Most people around here don’t read for fun. I’ll bet you’ve got some Sugar Daddy panting after you, throwing money at your problems in exchange for a little time between your sheets. I bet there’s a laundry list of guys taped to your bedroom door, since you’ve made yourself all fuckable.”

She drew back her hand and slapped him. Hard.

“I have no idea what happened to you, Will Patterson, but you are not the same person I remember. How dare you strut into my bookstore and sling your crude accusations at me? What did I ever do to you?”

He stared at her for a long moment, and when she was sure he wasn’t going to answer, he whispered two words and departed. The words stayed with her for the rest of the day and well into the night.

You changed.”
