Content Editors

Skill requirements:

  • recognize, and able to make suggestions for fixing, show vs. tell;
  • strong grammatical and punctuation skills;
  • broad vocabulary and spelling skills (and willing to use a dictionary if you question the usage of a word);
  • ability to pinpoint character inconsistencies;
  • willingness to edit anything from horror to gay/lesbian//ménage erotica;
  • ability to spot plot issues;
  • strong communication skills and the ability to communicate in a respectful manner;
  • ability to spot continuity inconsistencies;
  • recognize, and able to suggest fixes, for awkward sentences;
  • Internet access;
  • Word or program able to read Word files;
  • know how to use the Track Changes;
  • know how to format files;
  • email account.

We do have line editors to catch typos, missing punctuation, etc, but editors should do their best to catch as much as possible before sending the manuscript to the line editor. You will be expected to take a test.

Acquisition Editors

Skill requirements:

  • strong grammatical and punctuation skills;
  • broad vocabulary and spelling skills;
  • ability to recognize and point out show vs. tell;
  • Internet access;
  • Word or program able to read Word files;
  • email account;
  • ability to pinpoint character inconsistencies;
  • willingness to read anything from horror to gay/lesbian//ménage erotica;
  • ability to spot plot issues;
  • strong communication skills and the ability to communicate in a respectful manner;
  • ability to spot continuity inconsistencies.

As an acquisitions editor, you will not be expected to edit like a content or line editor, but you do need to know these basics. The vast majority of submissions will not be contracted. The ability to reject a manuscript with respect is very important.

You will be given a test to show us your skill level. There is upward mobility in our organizations.
